2023 Global travel demand strong recovery inbound tourism explosive growth

The 2023 World Conference on Tourism Cooperation and Development opened in Beijing on Tuesday

According to the World Tourism City Development Report (2022) released at the meeting, global travel demand will recover strongly in 2022, tourism performance in developed economies is better, tourism recovery in emerging economies is relatively lagging, and global inbound tourism has shown explosive growth.

This conference is one of the ten summit forums held during the China International Fair for Trade in Services 2023, with the theme of "New Trends, new formats and new consumption to create new prosperity of cultural tourism", aiming to promote the world's tourism cities to grasp new trends, seize new opportunities, adapt to new formats and promote new consumption.

Yin Yong, Mayor of Beijing and Chairman of the Council of World Tourism Cities Federation, said in his speech that since the beginning of this year, the world tourism industry has ushered in a comprehensive recovery and strong growth. As an important tourist city in the world, Beijing received 150 million tourist visits in the first half of this year, and its tourism revenue exceeded 270 billion yuan, both of which doubled year-on-year, basically returning to the pre-epidemic level, and entering a new channel of comprehensive recovery featuring robust supply and demand and accelerated recovery.

Jose Luis Sanz, Mayor of Seville, Spain, expressed appreciation for the new development of tourism promoted by technology. In his speech, he shared the practice of setting up a smart tourism office in Seville, developing a smart tourism system, and cooperating with universities to develop comprehensive indicators of global tourism activities, and proposed to "tap new tourist groups, Provide diversified services "new ideas for sustainable tourism development.

Pansy Ho, Vice President and Secretary-General of the World Tourism Economy Forum, believes that the entire tourism industry ecosystem has changed, and more attention must be paid to innovation to promote the birth of new consumption trends. In her view, the World Tourism Federation can bring countries and regions together to strengthen cooperation between them.

In 2023, the demand for international travel has recovered strongly, and global tourism has ushered in explosive growth, but also brought new challenges to the development of urban tourism. At the conference, academic research results such as the World Tourism City Development Report (2022) were released.

According to reports, the World Tourism City Development Report (2022) takes 100 major tourism cities in the world as samples, starts from six dimensions such as city popularity, industrial prosperity, city wisdom and tourism safety, comprehensively reflects the development trend of the global tourism industry in 2022, and summarizes the general picture of the development of world tourism cities.

According to the report, New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles ranked the top three of the world's top 20 tourist cities for 2022 development, while China's Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

The 2023 World Conference on Tourism Cooperation and Development is co-hosted by the World Federation of Tourism Cities and the Beijing Municipal People's Government. Founded in 2012, the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) is the world's first city-dominated international tourism organization initiated by Beijing. After years of development, the number of members of the Federation has grown from the initial 58 to the current 242, covering 85 countries and regions around the world.
